Over the past few decades, the well-respected ‘Surface Print’ has built up a reputation for producing the finest quality wallpapers in the United Kingdom, using the most traditional printing methods available. Steeped in history and a family owned business, the company has been making fine grade wallpapers at their factory in Lancashire for almost thirty years.

‘1838 Wallcoverings’ is the brainchild of 34 year-old James Watson, the great grandson of Walter Watson – the first wallpaper enthusiast in the family. Having worked in wallpaper for over ten years, James is the fourth generation of Watson’s to work in the wallpaper industry and is keen to take the company forward in a new direction along with his sister Abigail who is the company’s Marketing Director.

1838 will launch two brand new collections at the prestigious Chelsea Harbour design expose – ‘Focus’ during London Design Week this September 2016. The new collections aptly named ‘Rosemore’ and ‘Avington’ provide a harmonious mix of historical and contemporary designs drawn from English country gardens and stately homes throughout the UK.

The elegant ‘Rosemore’ collection inspired by English country gardens comprises a selection of soft floral trails, hazy woodland scenes, rambling rose designs and sophisticated scroll damasks. Encompassing a combination of gentle greys, delicate pinks, warm yellows and smoky blue, combined with subtle textures – the soft tones of each of the ‘Rosemore’ designs will provide a touch of tranquillity to any interior.

‘Avington’ on the other hand, provides something a little more adventurous – a collection of statement designs, created to add drama and impact. Drawing inspiration from English stately homes, this collection is made up of sophisticated flocks, stunning chinoiserie and classic silk Moires. The collection encompasses subtle shades of matching monochrome and metallics alongside rich gold tones and soft earthy hues.

Managing Director, James Watson enthuses: ‘We are delighted to launch ‘1838 Wallcoverings’ to the UK and export markets. As one of only a handful of traditional wallpaper manufacturers left in the world, our focus has always been about manufacturing the best quality wallpapers on the market today. Our skilled workforce combined with our traditional printing techniques enables us to produce a very special product that we are extremely proud of. I do hope our customers will be able to appreciate and enjoy the great care and pride that has gone into designing and making each unique wallcovering as much as we do.’

The 1838 collections are all designed with the customer in mind. Each design has been created to last, proving easy to hang (paste the wall) and are available in a range of colourways to suit any taste. Each collection has been made with care using traditional techniques.
